Wellness EquippedIt's alright. We all overate yesterday. Let's get back on track today! |
We've all been there: we indulge in a large meal on Thanksgiving, feel sluggish and bloated afterwards, and then make a beeline for the couch. But what's really going on inside our bodies when we overindulge? Let's explore the science of metabolism to find out how your body processes food and how you can maximize your metabolism to feel your best after large meals. The human body is an amazing machine, and few things are more fascinating than exploring how it works. Metabolism is one of the most important functions of the body, yet it's often misunderstood. So, what exactly is metabolism?Metabolism is the process by which your body converts food into energy. This happens in two stages: digestion and absorption. During digestion, enzymes in your stomach and small intestine break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into their individual constituents. The absorption stage of metabolism is when your body takes in the food you ate and turns it into energy. These nutrients are then absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to the cells where they're needed for energy production. What is typically happening when you get a little sleepy is your body is utilizing as many resources as it can to help digest all the food you just put in your stomach. With that being defined let's dive into the science backed methods to help your bodies metabolism after a large meal like a big Thanksgiving dinner. Walking After You EatOne common piece of advice that you may have heard is to take a post-meal walk. But does this actually help with digestion and metabolism? The answer is yes! Walking helps move food through your digestive system more quickly and also helps regulate blood sugar levels. Walking after meals can also help promote weight loss by increasing calorie expenditure and preventing overeating. It's no secret that walking is a great form of exercise, but what you may not know is that it can also help with digestion and metabolism. Walking after meals helps move food through your digestive system more quickly, regulate blood sugar levels, and promote weight loss. So if you're looking for a way to improve your health, consider taking a post-meal walk! Even just 10 minutes around the block can make a huge difference, however this is going to be most effective 60-90 minutes after your meal. โ Soleus Push UpsAnother way to boost your metabolism is to perform exercises that target the soleus muscle. This muscle is located in the calf area and is responsible for plantarflexion, or the downward movement of the foot. โ Working this muscle can help increase blood flow and improve circulation throughout the body, which in turn can lead to increased metabolism. One simple exercise that targets the soleus muscle is something that looks like a seated calf raise, but does not have to be done as intensely or with any weight. It is typically known as the Soleus Pushup. With your feet flat on the ground, lift the heel of your foot in the air, leaving the toes and front half of your foot on the ground. From there just casually release that lift and let your heel regain contact with the ground. That's it. โ Your metabolism is responsible for converting food into energy, which means that it plays a vital role in your overall health and well-being. By understanding how your body metabolizes food, you can make simple changes to your lifestyle that will maximize your metabolism and help you feel your best after large meals. So next time you overindulge, go for a walk or perform some Soleus push-ups to jumpstart your metabolism! After all this is hitting your inbox on Black Friday, so you are probably eating some Thanksgiving leftovers today just like me. โ -Dids ๐ช๐ง Disclaimer: This newsletter is created with the intent that it is not to be taken as medical advice.
