What is Wellness Equipped? 💪ðŸ§
This newsletter is a way for me to bring my personal interest of the world of healthcare and wellness to a wider audience.
There are theories circulating that claim we may soon be able to add years to our lives quicker than we can live them (assuming the stars align just properly).
When asked where they envision themselves at 100, most people scoff and say they don’t know if they’ll live that long.
To be clear, I am completely cognizant of my mortality and do not aspire to eternal life. I personally don’t think technology will improve sufficiently in my lifetime to see that day arrive, but I’m ready to embrace the potential that it may in the future.
My focus with this newsletter, however, is to teach you to not only get more years out of your life, but also get more life out of your years.
I believe there are many factors, like the Standard American Diet for example, that are creating a much easier path to all cause mortality, or more simply put, mortality by any cause, but in this context I am generally referring to causes that are in fact avoidable. To help put this into context, here are statistics of vitamin and mineral deficiencies in Americans that I find pretty alarming:
• Potassium - 90% Deficiency
• Vitamin E - 80% Deficiency
• Calcium - 70% Deficiency
• Vitamins A, C, and Magnesium - 50% Deficiency
• Vitamin D - Greater than 50% Deficiency, which includes 90% of Americans of color, and 70% of elderly Americans.
That means approximately nine in ten Americans have some sort of nutrient deficiency, and keep in mind these are general vitamins and minerals that we should be getting from our food alone (if and whenever possible).
But without getting into too much detail on topics we will be covering in future newsletters, I want to introduce this newsletter to you as a no cost, (although there will be appropriate affiliates and sponsors in the future) easy to digest way to learn from both myself and peer reviewed studies I will be using to provide information on topics, as well as people I feel best represent topics with their expertise and experiences.
The biggest barrier to this area of study, in my opinion, is that it is very easy to begin to get way to complex with this type of information, be it from terminology or anecdotal studies, so I am going to provide all of this information in ways that both the experts will understand, but also in ways that you reading this will be able to digest and apply to your life.
I plan on doing this by releasing a new edition of this newsletter every week with a new topic to digest, some being stories of my own wellness journey, some being topics of study I find fascinating that are happening in the world around us. There will also be newsletters both in full and in part surrounding recent podcasts, books, or articles I read or listen to.
I am not a doctor, physician, or medical professional of any type, but what I am is someone with an itch to scratch, and I look forward to having you on this journey with me as we begin to live our happiest, healthiest, and most fulfilled lives.
With that all being said I want to end this short introductory newsletter by answering a few questions. For some background, Wellness Equipped was initially going to be a podcast, but I felt that in order for me to properly maintain this idea I needed to find the medium that was the least friction to my not so consistent schedule. A newsletter is the perfect medium for me to be able to collect thoughts, work on multiple editions at once, and properly source any information I do end up finding that I want to add. These questions were going to be the questions I was going to ask every guest I had on, but I still feel like these are great questions to help bridge the gap of bringing my enthusiasm toward this topic to you.
What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness to me is the culmination of many different aspects of what most people consider health and some things that people don’t. Wellness in my definition can be as simple as whether or not you have high blood pressure or as complex as your relationships with your family and friends, your significant other, or even your spiritual health. There is a pretty sharp curve we see within aging that the quality of life slowly dwindles as we approach our final days, my goal is to keep the quality of life as high as I can until the time comes for me to pass. A steeper slope if you will.
What is one thing everyone can do today to equip themselves with wellness?
I made a post about this recently, I feel that the easiest answer to this is to eliminate any added sugar to your diet today. Have you ever eaten a ton of Kit Kats right before bed and wondered why you feel like garbage the next day? Bingo. Another quick tip, and this might not work for everyone but it does for me, if it is in the house it’ll get eaten. Just never let yourself bring the junk food home. While that is easier said than done, if you do your best to not buy one unhealthy item the next time you go to the store, it will help greatly.
How does someone start their wellness journey?
This answer varies based on what your goals are. Like I said, an easy solution to get started is to begin to reduce and ideally remove added sugar from your diet. In addition to that begin to look at what you can do and what you want to be able to do. I think going on 20 minute walks in the mornings are critical to your health from a general wellness standpoint and also a circadian clock standpoint. Mornings in my opinion are greatly overlooked and an upcoming newsletter will be highlighting what an ideal morning looks like, so be sure to be subscribed to not miss it.
And with that all being said, I welcome you to Wellness Equipped.
