Wellness Equipped - 3 Ways I Go About Sourcing the BEST Wellness Information ๐Ÿ“š

Wellness Equipped

Gathering data that works for your wellness.

Lets admit it, trying to gather all of the information to life a happier healthier life can be daunting to say the least.

I have been on this journey for years, going as far back as nearly becoming a Certified Personal Trainer almost a decade ago.

Leaving High School as a state athlete in multiple events as a track runner as well as being scouted by professional baseball organizations until I blew my shoulder out, I knew that once I left being active physically 5 days a week most of the year that my body was going to change.

I saw it happen slowly over time, then all at once when the anxiety hit and the pandemic began.

It was then I knew that if I was going to be living a healthy happy life at 80 (and beyond), I needed to make changes today at 29.

Here are 3 ways you can Equip yourself with the best Wellness information for you.

1) Audiobooks (or just books) and Podcasts

For those who don't know, I own a media company and spend a lot of time in the car driving from location to location throughout the week. During that time I rarely do anything but listen to podcasts.

I have briefly mentioned the help podcasts have been previously, but there is something about being able to absorb a free resource of podcasts from people who are qualified and are actively in the space of discovering so much more about the human body than we know today.

Some of my absolute favorites are:

I find these podcasts to give me the most information I need to apply to my life. Now I will note here that it is important to take everything with a grain of salt that you absorb. What is considered healthy today could be debunked in 30 years. I don't feel that is happening as often and I am pretty sure we are getting to a good place of future proofed discovery, but it is something to keep in mind.

The other half of this is books.

I have used Audible for a period of time and have a decent library on there and will always go to an audiobook in the car if I know I have a long drive ahead of me.

Some of my favorites here are:

Admittedly there are a lot more books I have not yet gotten to that are on the bookshelf, so let me know if maybe a book review once a month or something along those lines would be cool to see!

2) Published Articles

When listening to Podcasts, a lot of the time they will reference an article or published study in their discussions. 9 times out of 10 they will provide a link to said study in their show notes, this is a great way to digest, albeit pretty high level, information on a topic you are listening to.

Another amazing website (that isn't paywalled which is a big point of friction for me) is examine.com โ€‹

This is what they have on their website in the about me describing what they do:

Examine is the largest database of nutrition and supplement research on the Internet. Founded in early 2011, our mission is to analyze the full body of evidence to help you make healthy choices. As an educational organization, we are not affiliated with any supplement or food company, nor are any members of our research team.

What I love about this website is that I can go and look up any supplement, vitamin, mineral or compound, and it will be there for me to digest how it works, why it works, and come up with a conclusion if I want to add it to my stack based on how it interacts with other compounds.

This is the breakdown of Alpha-GPC alone.

โ€‹

Having a resource like this not only can teach me a lot about what I already take, but also introduce me to something that might work better instead.

Give it a look!

3) Trial and Error

Before we move any further with this point I want to STRESS that it is vital you do not do anything without the supervision of a licensed professional. When I was both getting on and off of my anxiety medication for example, I did not do it alone, your health is in your hands, please be safe when trying anything new.

With that out of the way I think one of the more fascinating parts of life is trial and error.

You didn't know you found the right career until you tried it right?

Prime example from my personal experience.

I was hearing all of this hype around Lion's Mane Mushroom. The cognitive effects, how it will help with brain fog, help me focus, etc.

It did not work for me.

BUT with that in mind, what I did do was to a degree deconstruct the supplements I was taking.

Personally I like to take individual ingredients. It gives me more control over what I feel I need given the circumstances. So when I discovered that one of my supplements had Lion's Mane but also Alpha-GPC, I figured I would give that a go.

And suddenly I heard the angels from the heavens.

Okay, not really, but let me tell you I am a huge fan of Alpha-GPC now. I take 1 300mg pill before any bout of activity either physical in nature or if I need a good focus session (with garlic now thanks to Andrew Huberman and some research he pointed out in a recent episode) and I am off and running.

I am writing this newsletter as we speak having just taken Alpha-GPC prior.

The beauty and the curse is you don't know what you don't know. And while I want to be clear that you need to be safe with everything you do, if you hear a bunch of buzz around something and it doesn't work, look to resources like I previously mentioned to maybe find a new thing that can work for you.

For example I was turned on to binaural beats through a couple of podcast episodes and gave it a try. I am also as I write this listening to a concentration mix with some ocean waves attached to it. If I will be honest my anxiety has been a little high as of late and my brain has not been able to fully latch onto something, but with my combination of these binaural beats and the Alpha-GPC I am locked in right now and will continue to be as I transition into my actual work for the day.

Now I say all this only to help open your eyes to all of the resources out there. As I said before we don't know what we don't know. If you feel a little crummy and have no clue why, experiment a little. What if you shift your sleep schedule a little? Are you getting enough water? How many steps do you take each day?

The beauty is that you can try a lot of different things and find what works. We easily get discouraged because we hear this PERFECT morning routine article and get mad when we can't replicate it 365 days a year.

That is simply unrealistic.

But what we can do is try a few things here and there to make our lives better.

Did I miss anything? Let me know!

Stay safe, and happy researching.
